TV Ears Costco
I needed another set of TV ears and an extra headset and just received the new 3.0 variety. My old 2.3mhz set (which I still have) is excellent with good sound and volume (in fact, I had another old set a few years ago that finally sucumbed that was excellent too). The 2.3mhz is no longer available. The new 3.0 sets were both poor quality with about 1/2 the volume of the old set, and also made the tv sound muffled and fuzzy. TV Ears where good enough to send out two replacements for these that were supposedly tested and in great condition. I received them today and they sounded exactly the same as the ones they were going to replace - poor. TV Ears wanted to make it work and asked that I ship back all 4 headsets and my OLD set so they could listen and do what was necessary to send me two good sets. Anyway, since I'm way too afraid to lose the one good set that I have, this was not viable. TV Ears were going to send me a prepaid label to return the lot, and I expected it within the hour - it never came - in fact, they did sound quite unhappy that I wanted my money back (within the 30 day guarantee). After calling back and asking where the label was, I was told that since I would not send my OLD set in too and wanted my money back I could just pay for them ALL to come back. Needless to say, not a good experience. Sad to see a good product go down hill.
I ordered TV Ears for my 77 year old parents and they work great. My parents are living with us for the summer, and it's been working well except for the TV volume. They were turning the volume up to 34. My husband and I listen to it at 20-22. Ever since they got the TV Ears, the TV volume has gone down to a more "normal" level. In fact, they can put the TV Ears on and still hear the TV when it's on mute.
My form of hearing deficiency is caused by loss of upper frequencies. Because of this, turning up the volume does not help me hear better-- it only makes the inaudible noise painfully loud.
Because of that, it surprised me when my audiologist recommended TV ears for me. I purchased them on Amazon, and when I received them realize TV ears is merely a crude amplification system. Although it has a "tone" control, it cannot selectively adjust frequencies to improve my ability to understand what's being said. It only makes it louder. Hence, it amplifies my problem!
Needless to say, I got no benefit from TV Ears. If you have broad-spectrum hearing loss, you may benefit from this device. But if you're like me, all it will do is amplify the noise.
